Programme Note:
I grew up to the sound of wind chimes - specifically metal wind chimes - always twinkling away in my back garden. A gentle breeze would create a soothing combination of intervals whilst a gail force wind would create a headache and for them to be swiftly placed in the shed out of harm's way. Thinking about the air we breathe, the wind and the oxygen of life, I feel as though these garden ornaments present all of these things in both literal and metaphorical ways.
Breathes, gasps & wind chimes aims to embody and contrast the frenetic energy and unpredictability of the wind with the meditative stillness that can resonate through such chimes, reflecting the idea that, despite the unstable and sometimes damaging power of nature, it is precisely this energy that gives them a voice; without it, the chimes would remain motionless and suspended in silence.
